The
Reach Out and Read (ROR) program at Family Health Center
is a pediatric literacy program. ROR was developed to
foster children's love of books and reading by giving
them books and encouraging their parents to read to them
at home. The program uses the supportive relationship
between parents and health care providers to educate parents
about literacy development, and integrates literacy into
regular pediatric care for children from the ages of six
months to five years.
During
well-child visits, physicians and nurse practitioners
advise parents about the importance of reading with young
children. At every well-child visit, children ages six
months to five years receive a new, developmentally and
culturally appropriate children's book to take home and
keep. In the clinic waiting rooms, volunteer readers read
books to children, exposing them to books and modeling
reading aloud techniques to parents while demonstrating
the please of looking at books together.
We
appreciate donations of gently-used books as well as monetary
donatins.
