Blues 1, Susan Black

Armed with a degree in art from the 1970s, I’ve explored caricature, cartooning, greeting cards and more over the decades since then, in addition to spending 25 years+ as a graphic designer.  From 2011 to 2016, my interest was creating bold, 3-dimensional mixed media pieces from recycled materials, with personal and political themes. Many were exhibited locally at ArtsWorcester, the Sprinkler Factory and The Willows at Worcester. My current series brings together abstract painting and paper collage, allowing the interplay of soft edges, hard edges, color and motion within 2 dimensions. The paper elements are details cut from photos of real objects, creating abstract elements relating to and contrasting with the paintings. As with most ways in which I express myself, humor sneaks into these pieces. I enjoy exploring unexpected combinations, whether in mode of dress, food preparation or making art; the challenge of a new variation—a twist on a theme—is paramount.
