Striped Tray, Kim Cutler

It surprises me to be writing about my journey to become a potter. I have been a graphic designer so long that my identity has been a 2-dimensional one—printed works on paper. But I have been making pots for 40 years and, in the last ten, have considered it a serious enterprise.

I studied art history in college and painting in grad school. Both courses of study contribute to a sense of design and both support an awareness of art from the past. Clay came to me through classes and workshops at the Worcester Center for Crafts. I am both its long-time student and serious groupee. But creating a studio of my own rounded out my education. That's where I hole up and get my hands dirty!
