Since 2009, Family Health Center of Worcester's FNP residency has given nursing residents the unique opportunity to serve a large and diverse patient population in the heart of vibrant downtown Worcester. Family Health Center of Worcester is committed to addressing the shortage of primary care providers by training and preparing Family Nurse Practitioners to serve as providers for vulnerable and low-income patients, and is only the second FNP residency in the country to be conducted at a community health center.

Family Health Center of Worcester serves over 33,000 patients from the greater Worcester area in over 33 different languages. Our services include comprehensive primary care and family medicine, maternal child health, dentistry, mental and behavioral health, a Walk In Center for Urgent and Primary care, a low-cost pharmacy, lab, radiology and digital mammography, a Refugee Health Clinic, a Teen Health clinic, the Homeless Families Program, HIV counseling and testing, health education and promotion programming, and public health programs for the early edtection and prevention of disease. FHCW also operates 6 school-based health centers within the Worcester Public Schools and four WIC offices throughout the greater Worcester area.

At Family Health Center, FNP residents will work with faculty with a wide variety of expertise and clinical interests, including women’s health, international family medicine, addiction medicine, chronic illness care, complementary medicine, office procedures, and new models of health care delivery. Family Health Center consistently undertakes quality improvement initiatives and encourages resident participation around innovation in delivery of care. Residents have the opportunity to engage in a number of specialty care and research opportunities through UMass Medical School, and will work closely with Family Health Center's family medicine residents. Residents will be on the cutting edge of health care delivery as they train to work within a Patient-Centered Medical Home and use our state-of-the-art electronic medical records system. 

Our residency program will: 

  • Prepare Nurse Practitioners to take on full responsibility for comprehensive primary care services for complex, underserved populations across all life cycles.
  • Build upon the clinical knowledge acquired during formal education by providing clinical and professional support for Nurse Practitioners in an active learning environment.
  • Expand the number of Nurse Practitioners interested in building a life-long career in Community Health.
  • Increase Nurse Practitioner leaders within organizations that provide care to underserved patient populations.
